"Yes, sir. I understand that… Uh-huh. Yeah, but I just…" Groaning, I dropped my phone on the couch beside me, leaning back to stare at the ceiling with a frustrated scowl.

A face loomed over me, smiling sympathetically, or so it appeared when viewed upside down. It was Seymour. His hands had migrated automatically to my shoulders, those magical thumbs already working at the stress knots between them. "Hard day?"

"The worst." To my credit, I only pouted for a second before smooshing my lips into a kissy face. Humming happily, I accepted his kiss when he immediately bent over to comply.

Seymour smiled shyly as he pulled away, standing straight again as he continued kneading my shoulders. "Spiderman kisses are awesome, but awkward. Wanna tell me about your day?"

"Your first clue was when I didn't hear you come in."

"True, but you were on the phone. I figured that was why."

My mate was so sweet and caring. Even after working all day himself, his first concern was for me. My job took me everywhere. It was just as likely to find me here on the couch making calls as it was for me to be out on the town chasing a lead or actually at the office. Although that was generally the last place I tried to be found, since the stories happened outside the newsroom.

Sighing, I gestured toward my phone. "I've been following up on the list of people who sold their diners. Nobody will talk to me, or if they will then they won't give me a name."

Seymour hummed softly, looking off to the side as he considered it. "Do you think it's because they won’t talk, or maybe because they can't tell you? I could be reaching here, but it's possible they had to sign a nondisclosure agreement."

My mouth fell open. Why hadn’t I thought of that? I was excited now, parroting my mate’s thought right back as if I’d been part of it. "That's brilliant! And explains so much, right? It isn't that they won't talk—they literally can't. But crap, how do I prove that?"

With a nod toward my phone, Seymour once again proved that his brain was just as big as his muscles. "Ask them. I'm sure they can at least admit that much. They might not be able to offer the information, but if you asked it as a yes or no question, you might have better luck."

His hands fell away as I sat up, reaching for my phone once again. Seymour chuckled, patting my shoulder as he turned to leave the room. "You go ahead and make some more calls, I'm gonna take a shower and see about starting dinner."

I nodded, lifting my hand in a halfhearted wave, my brain already focused on the task at hand. By the time I’d made a few more calls, garlicky deliciousness was floating in from the kitchen. Since I clearly wasn't going to be making any more progress tonight, I decided to call it for the day. I could start fresh tomorrow, tonight was for my mate.
